From the book “Rainbows of Rock, Tables of Stone – The Natural Arches and Pillars of Ohio” by Timothy A. Snyder © 2009:

"Big Pine Creek Pillar, located in Hocking State Forest, is certainly one of our more impressive natural pillars. This tea table is especially notable for the height of its leg in comparison to its width. It raises 27 feet on the uphill side and 32 feet on the downhill side from a base that is only 3 feet wide and 14 feet long. This slender support narrows even more as it rises to a much wider table approximately 13 feet wide, 12 feet long and 5 feet thick. This results in an impressive amount of overhang above a remarkably tall, thin leg.

"As with most other scenic features in the Hocking Hills region, Big Pine Creek Pillar has formed in the Black Hand Sandstone. It is a remnant of the cliff 7 feet behind it, separated by a vertical fracture. The resistant layer of sandstone forming the table is evident in the top few feet of the cliff where it forms a slight projection. The lower, less-resistant layers forming the leg are undercut in the cliff. A short distance to the west, a very large cliff remnant displaying the same top-heavy profile, although in more massive form, has tipped back against the cliff to form an impressive gravity arch. Big Pine Creek Pillar was named for Big Pine Creek which flows in the valley below it."
