A print of this engraving can be found in the Armitt Collection in Ambleside.

William Green was born in Manchester and was educated in drawing and geometry at Salford. In his early life he was a surveyor, but was encouraged to develop his artistic abilities by Thomas West, the historian and topographer.

Green was opposed to the romanticisation of art and vowed to adhere accurately to nature. He moved to Ambleside and produced many artistic pieces in the area. The culmination of his efforts over two decades was the Tourists New Guide to the Lake District.
