The statue was sculpted by László Marton (1925 - 2008), a prolific Hungarian sculptor.
"The inspiration for the statue came from his oldest daughter from his first marriage. Playing in the garden, she dressed as a princess: laid a bathrobe on her shoulders and put a crown on her head. I managed to capture this moment and immediately felt that this was a successful work of art.
Years later, the capital requested a statue from me. I immediately thought of the "Little Princess" and luckily we managed to find the place where the statue feels good.
This later statue placed here in 1990 is a replica of the original 1972 statue, which is smaller and housed in the Hungarian National Gallery."

The Danube Promenade is a busy pedestrianised street and many of the passers by rub the knees of the statue which have become shiny over the years.
