This whimsical mural is located on the side of the Charlo Post Office. Though the mural does not show the name of the company it was most likely the Overland Mail & Express Company who passed through Charlo around 1866.
The driver is intense keeping the horses moving though this isolated area of Montana, while the man on top is riding shotgun. Stagecoach robberies were common in those frontier days, as bandits were waiting for their chance to steal the strongbox that was usually on board.
Charlo was named after Chief Charlo, Claw of the Little Grizzly, who lived from 1830 to 1910 and served as chief of the Bitterroot Salish Nation.
