There are more than 6200 caves including shorter caves of overhang character and Karst territories cover more than 2700 sq.km in Slovakia. The majority of registered caves is in the Slovak Karst, Low Tatras and Spiš-Gemer Karst (Slovak Paradise, Muráò Plateau), Greater Fatra, Western, High and Belianske Tatras.

Our caves are mostly formed in Mesozoic Middle Triassic Limestones, less in travertines and sporadically in other less soluble rocks. More than 180 caves are formed in non-karst rocks (andesites, basalts and their volcanoclastics, sandstones, quartzites, shales, quartz).
Mazarna cave, Greater Fatra

Wide entrance to cave Mazarna in Greater Fatra mountains is located directly on a hiking trail to summit of Tlsta in elevation 830 metres. It is accessible for public. Cave is more than 130 metres long, created by leaking water with carbon dioxide. Massive entrance was formed by frost weathering.

Entrance hall is about 45 metres long and continues in two narrow corridors to different directions - south and northeastwards. There is another hall after NE corridor. Cave is important for archeologists - bones of cave bear and pottery from Bronze Age were found here.

V priestoroch jaskyne boli najdene kosti jaskynneho medveda a nalezy z doby bronzovej (kultura s kanelovou keramikou).
