Hours are tentative, because it is a truism in barbecue that all the good stuff goes early, and when it's gone, it's gone:

Sunday: 11 AM to 3 PM
Monday: Closed
Tuesday - Thursday: 11 AM to 3 PM
Friday and Saturday: 11 AM to 10 PM

Pecan Lodge is one of the newer places in Dallas, and it has quickly established itself as one of the best. Originally in the Dallas Farmers Market, it relocated to Deep Ellum in 2014, and its mere presence here is bringing Deep Ellum back into relevance.

Service here is similar to that of many pit barbecue joints in Texas, where you place your order at the counter and they hand it off to you. However, due to high demand, you're not watching them slice everything up, to carry off in butcher paper. Once they've got your order, go find a place to sit, inside, outside, or at the bar (where they serve plenty of local craft beer), and they'll call your number in just a few minutes. Your food awaits, on a tray with plenty of bread, pickles, and onions. It's a bit different from the usual, but again, it is so busy here that they'd have lines around the block if they did things like everybody else. This arrangement works, and they seem to have learned it from their days across the freeway. Besides a beer bar, there's a soft drink station near the serving area, between the registers, and yes, there's sweet and unsweetened tea.

Typically, one orders meat by the pound or fraction thereof. Menus are on the wall, so take advantage of your time in line to know what you want before you get to the counter. They offer brisket, pork and beef ribs (the latter weigh about a pound each...think "The Flintstones"), sausage (regular or jalapeño), and pulled pork. Ask the pitmaster if they have any specials going on, and one can also get fried chicken and a loaded sweet potato ("The Hot Mess," they call it...it looks outstanding.). They also offer sandwiches and two- or three-meat plates that come with a side of mac and cheese, collard greens, pinto beans, fried okra, or cole slaw. If you still have room after all that, dessert is banana pudding, cookies, and peach cobbler.

There is no pig-out deal per se, although you can drop sixty-nine bucks for a family platter that will feed four or five people, or one person the size of Andre the Giant. About as cheap as you're going to get is a slice of something by the pound, as even the sandwiches are a bit pricy by comparison.

Given the popularity of Pecan Lodge, there is plenty of seating. It's not cavernous like the Salt Lick or County Line, down in the Hill Country, but they've got outdoor seating and a pretty quick turnover inside. Most folks are friendly enough that, if their party of two is at the end of a table for six, they'll let you slide in at the other end of the table, as long as you don't turn things into a bachelor party. Your first thought will be to send someone to save a table, but they have signs up front asking that you don't do that. Relax, you'll get a spot, and you'll enjoy some of the best food in the Metroplex.
