Depicted small monument devoted to Catholic priest Josef Toufar, victim of trial arranged by Communist Secret state police, you can find in a small park bearing his name located at Church of Ss. Peter and Paul in town Ledec nad Sázavou.

Josef Toufar
Born 14.7.1902 in Arnholec (Jihlava district). In 1927, after father's death, he decided for priesthood. In order to be able to pursue higher education, he left his home at the age of 26 to enroll in the high school in Nemecký Brod (nowadays Havlíckuv Brod), whereupon he transferred to Chotebor, where he graduated in 1935. Thus, he was able to join the Seminary in Hradec Králové. Thereupon, he was appointed chaplain in Zahrádka where he served as pastor from April 1945. For his successful activity as priest and considerable effect on young people, he was at the instigation of the local Communist Party official transferred to parish of Cíhošt (ca 6 km of Ledec nad Sázavou), where he was active from April 1948 as its administrator. After the events that followed the movement of the altar cross in the Cíhošt church, he was arrested on 28.1.1950 by the Secret state police (StB) and taken to the anti-clerical investigation department in Valdice, where they forced him - under brutal torture - to confess that the cross' movement was a fraud arranged by him. He died of consequences of the torture on 25.2.1950 in Prague...

The tablet on the granite boulder bears following inscription in Czech and English:

VESNICKÝ FARÁR JOSEF TOUFAR PUSOBIL V TOMTO KRAJI, NEJPRVE V ZAHRÁDCE, POZDEJI V CÍHOŠTI. BYL TO ON, KTERÝ KÁZAL Z CÍHOŠTSKÉ KAZATELNY, KDYŽ SE V KOSTELÍKU HÝBAL KRÍŽEK. TI, KTERÍ TO VIDELI, O TOM PODÁVAJÍ SVEDECTVÍ A VERÍ V ÚKAZ BOŽÍ. PSAL SE ROK 1949.

ZEMREL JAKO MUCEDNÍK RUKOU TRÝZNITELE.

ZE VŠECH STRAN JSI MI VŠAK, HOSPODINE, ŠTÍTEM,
TYS MÁ SLÁVA, TY MI POZVEDÁŠ HLAVU. (ŽALM 3 )

AS MUCH AS THE PEOPLE LOVED HIM, THE REGIME DETESTED HIM.
FOR ALL THE GOOD, HE PAID THE HIGHEST PRICE.

THE VILLAGE PASTOR JOSEF TOUFAR USED T0 WORK IN THIS REGION, FIRST IN ZAHRÁDKA, THEN IN CÍHOŠT. HE WAS IN THE PULPIT PREACHING TO THE CÍHOŠT CONGREGATION WHEN THE CROSS IN THE LITTLE CHURCH BEGAN TO MOVE. THOSE WHO SAW IT TESTIFY TO IT AS A FACT AND BELIEVE THAT IT WAS A GOODLY PHENOMENON TO THIS DAY. IT HAPPENED IN DECEMBER I949.

HE DIED AS A MARTYR OF FAITH BY THE HAND OF HIS TORMENTOR.
