Evacustes A Phipson was born Edward Arthur Phipson in 1854 in King’s Norton. He changed his first name to Evacustes, a greek word meaning easy listener. He emigrated to Australia, but returned in 1889 to earn his living as a painter. He produced many paintings of local scenes across Britain. He died in Rye in 1931.
The key identifying features in this painting are the two tall chimneys of the King’s house in the middle distance, and the King’s bakehouse to the right of that. The watercolour painting is in the Collection of St Albans Museum.
