Nothing is known about J P Smith. There is a reference to a JP Smith in a publication on the Manchester Art Museum in 1880 and another reference to a JP Smith in 1843 in the West of England Art Union publication.
Much of the content of the painting is obscured by trees in the now photograph. Two of the houses on the left are still identifiable, as is the lych gate and wall to the right. The Sword in Hand pub to the right is now obscured by trees. The painting is oil on canvas and in the collection of the Hertford Museum.
