In John Boyne's novel "The Absolutist", the main character, a British soldier named Tristan Sadler, is in a foxhole in France during World War I. As bombs burst in the air above him, he reminisces about the time in June 1911, when as a child of 11 years, he, his sister and father went to Buckingham Palace to see fireworks. The fireworks were set off on the eve of King George V's coronation. Tristan gets lost and when his father finds him, he is slapped hard across the face..to the astonishment of onlookers. One woman even assaulted the father in complaint.
