In Boston's Back Bay neighborhood, on a bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike, is a chain-link fence with love padlocks on them.

The location is about as far away from a 'romantic' location as I imagine one could be. It's on an urban bridge, overlooking a highway, with far views of 'The Pru' and red tail-lights. The appeal may be more that this is a cross-roads location where college students are there in numbers. Berkeley College of Music is at this location, while MIT is across the river about a mile (and some number of smoots). But also, there are shopping areas like Newbury Street and Boylston Street, and the MBTA 'T' Subway stop, "Auditorium," is at the end of the bridge.

There are about 50 locks at this location. I don't know when the first padlock was attached. There is a blog that had an entry on June 2013 that featured the location. This was used in the year field, below and the link is listed below.
