Marker Name: Newberry Volcano
Marker Text: Newberry Volcano is a large shield-shaped composite volcano that dominates the skyline to the southeast. It is Oregon’s largest volcano with vents extending about 50 miles north to south and 25 miles east to west. Lava flows from Newberry extend 75 miles north to south. Newberry Volcano and its apron of lava flows cover almost 1,200 square miles, about the size of the state of Rhode Island.

Newberry is made up of lava rocks that range from basalt to rhyolite in composition and range from 1,300 to 400,000 years old. At the summit of the volcano is Newberry Caldera, a collapsed volcanic depression that contains Paulina and East Lakes. Newberry Caldera covers 17 square miles, about the size of the city of Bend!
