Irene Beatrice Hawkins was born in Yorkshire in 1906. She was taught art at the York School of Art and the Royal College of Art. She became an illustrator, and illustrated Walter De la Mare’s Collection of Children’s Stories.

The painting would have been made at the front of the stables, within the private grounds of Youngsbury. The today picture is taken from the public side of the stables. The painting was made around 1940 as part of the Recording Britain project. The watercolour painting is in the collection of the V&A Museum. There is a companion painting of the house at Youngsbury, painted from the park. That view is now totally obscured by the dreaded leyladii.
