Towards the end of John Dos Passos' novel "1919", Anne Elizabeth and the man she considers her fiance, Dick Savage are reunited in Rome. They spend the night with their friend Ed Schuyler who was leaving his position there with the Red Cross to settle in Paris. The three friends go to dinner. After dinner they hire a cab to drive around...and they stop at the Trevi Fountain to throw in some coins... an act rumored to ensure the visitor's return to Rome. They eventually go back to Ed's place to drink some more while Ed finishes his packing.
