One year after the Olympic Games 1936 in Berlin the artist Fritz Klimsch (* 1870 in Frankfurt am Main; † 1960 in Freiburg) had got the order from the Supreme Army Command to build a sculptur for the new military hospital in Magdeburg. The bookseller Ottilie Meyer from Berlin was his model.
The artist chose the name "Olympia".

1958 the city of Gelsenkirchen acquired this sculpture to place it at the present location.
