A wonderful free campsite on the banks of the Broad River right underneath the old railroad bridge that is now part of the Palmetto Trail. You will have to park you car at the top of the hill and carry down your things to the site. There are several picnic tables here but absolutely no bathroom facilities. Campfires are allowed.
This passage of the Palmetto Trail will take you from this trailhead (Alston) to near the town of Propersity SC along an old railroad bed. I would recommend rugged shoes for extended hikes as the white rail stones has not been removed once you walk across the bridge. You can ride a bike on it but I would recommend a rugged mountain bike as mentioned above.
This is also a very common spot for kayakers to put in or take out canoes. And popular for fishing.
Note: The only place of business where you can get a few basic things is the drug store in Peak and basically that means candy bars, chips, and sodas, Any other supplies will require a significant drive. And twice a night the active rail track about 1/4 mile has trains come through so it will get loud at those times.
