Ottawa cancer survivors now have their very own park to meet and celebrate their perseverance at the Richard and Annette Bloch Cancer Survivors Park, a 1.4-hectare property at the intersections of Alta Vista Drive, Industrial Avenue, and Riverside Drive.
There are 21 similar Cancer Survivors Parks, but only one other in Canada. Local lawyer Chuck Merovitz and his wife Bonnie saw one of the parks on vacation six years ago and broached the concept with the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation, the City of Ottawa, volunteers, and donors.
There are sculptures, pathways, and plaques. The park also features green space for reflection and a healing garden with "stones of hope"
Richard Bloch, an American philanthropist who co-founded H&R Block, established a foundation to fight cancer after beating terminal lung cancer in 1978.
