The pier was built in 1854 and was orginally known as Railway Pier, as it was wharf complete with a railway line which ran the length of the pier and up along Cunningham Street to the city centre.
The railway tracks used by trains to load and unload cargo until the 1970s can still be seen on the deck.
Today the pier is now a recreational hub.
There is a function center and several restaurants at the end of the pier, which is over 300 metres long.
