This metal state of Arkansas marker is located in the southwest corner of the Pioneer Cemetery.
Established during the 1820s, Pioneer Cemetery in Batesville (pop. 10,248) is the oldest recognized and preserved cemetery in the state.

The text of the marker reads:
PIONEER CEMETERY

About the year 1826 John Miller, Robert
Crittenden, Charles Kelley and Richard Searcy
verbally gave and dedidicated this plot of
ground to the town of Batesville to be used
as a burial place. On April 5, 1856, the
cemetery property, then called the Cedar
Grove, was deeded to the town by Miller, John
Ringgold, Jesse Searcy, William B. Searcy,
Richard Searcy, Franklin W. and Elizabeth J.
Desha, and Edwin R. McGuire.
Erected 1965 by Arkansas History Commission and Batesville Jaycettes
