The Barwon River rises in the Otway Ranges, flows through Geelong, and eventually reaches its mouth at Barwon Heads, emptying into Bass Strait.

The river is an integral part of Geelong's natural environment, and provides much of the city's water supply. It is also a popular recreation area.
The name is derived from the Aboriginal word "Barrwang" which means magpie.
