This plaque is dedicated to Deas’ Brigade, commanded by Brig. Gen. Zach C. Deas in recognition of their service during the
Battle of Chickamauga, fought September 19–20, 1863. The plaque describes the action on Sept. 20, 1863 at 4:30 pm. This is one of four monuments to Deas’ Brigade on the battlefield.
Text on the plaque reads:
Deas’ Brigade.
Hindman’s Division – Polk’s Corps.
Brig. Gen. Zach C. Deas.
Sept. 20, 1863, 4:30 P. M.
19th Alabama | Col. Samuel K. McSpadden. |
22nd Alabama | Capt. Henry T. Toulmin. |
25th Alabama | Col. George D. Johnston. |
39th Alabama | Col. Whitfield Clark. |
50th Alabama | Col. J. G. Coltart. |
17th Alabama Battalion Sharpshooter | Capt. Jas. F. Nabers. |
Dent’s (Alabama) Battery | Capt. S. H. Dent. |
About 4 o’clock P.M. this brigade formed in the ravine west of the Vittetoe house on the left of Manigualt’s brigade, and assaulted the spur in its front. The left of the line reached this position, but the whole line was eventually driven back to the base of the hill, from which it again advanced and found that the enemy had retired.

Note
Trailhead Graphics, Inc. has produced a map of the Chickamauga Battlefield showing the locations of all of the monuments and the markers on the battlefield. Each location on the map has a number associated with it that cross-references to an index on the back of the map that has the name of the marker (called the Chick-Chatt NMP monument numbering system). This number corresponds to the structure Number listed on the NPS List of Classified Structures that is normally prefixed with the letters MT for the Chickamauga Battlefield.
