Moro rock is a granite monolith in Sequoia National Park. Its dome-like shape results from erosion along exfoliation joints. These are fractures in the rock that are parallel to the surface. This type of erosion tends to remove corners and sharp edges, thus creating rounded shapes.
There are several theories about how the exfoliation joints are created. These include overburden and rebound (when before deeply buried rocks slowly come to the surface, allowing them to expand), thermoelastic strain due to thermal expansion and contraction, chemical weathering or compressive stress parallel to the land's surface.
