Located at a junction to Willow Lake Recreation Area is a historical marker that highlights the watershed here. It reads:

BIG BUTTE SPRINGS WATERSHED

Volcanic cinders from Mt. McLoughlin, deposited over 20,000 acred, act as a large underground reservoir.

Large springs on the edges of the deposit provide domestic and industrial water to Medford.

Timber to the north and west harvested between 1925 and 1933. The new forest will provide winter game range, as well as timber for the future.

ROGUE RIVER NATIONAL FOREST

The Big Butte Springs Water Commission has blocked off many forest roads (previously accessible to the public) around the area to protect the watershed. I believe this is response to the drought conditions most of the Pacific Northwest has faced in the last four-plus years.

Historic Topic: Modern Age 1900 to date

Group Responsible for placement: Forest Service

Marker Type: Roadside

Region: Southern Oregon

County: Jackson
