Originally Clermont was built close to the confluence of Sandy & Wolffang Creeks, despite local aborigines pointing out that the creeks often flooded. On the above date a flood destroyed Clermont, killed 64 of its citizens & gave impetus to moving the town to higher ground. The marker is high up on a replica of a tree, as many of the surviving residents were found in trees. At the time it was Australia's worst natural disaster.
