Amateur (ham) radio is a great hobby for everyone...from youth to old age. There are many facets to ham radio, one of them being emergency communication.
The last full weekend of June every month is FIELD DAY weekend for many Amateur Radio (Ham) operators. June 27-28, 2015, June 25-26, 2016, June 24-25, 2017, etc.
The Hiawatha Valley Amateur Radio Club goes to Memorial Park, high above down town Red Wing. Field Day is an annual event where "Hams" as they are called, take two way radio equipment, portable antennas, generators, tents, etc. and set up at a location, often a field or park. They then operate a contest for 24 hours contacting as many other stations across the U.S. and Canada doing the same thing. Amateur Radio is a vital communications resource in times of disaster. This event helps operators proficient at emergency set-up. Some times in disasters, ham radio is the only communications resource available in the early stages of disasters.
The club sets up Saturday mornings and starts operating by 1 PM on Saturday and goes until noon on Sunday. Note the park gate is closed from sundown to sunrise.
If you can't make it on field day weekend, come anytime to the park and enjoy a great view of downtown Red Wing, MN and into Wisconsin.
