It is hard to imagine that Silver Lake was formed almost overnight about 1,000 years ago when a mountain in the Skagit Range gave way. No one knows if it was an earthquake or unstable ground created by groundwater. However the consequences of the landslide were significant. The rubble and debris settled across Silverhope Creek creating Silver Lake.

The signs of the landslide are everywhere yet hidden until you understand what you are looking at. The sheer rock face on the mountain with significant talus deposits at the bottom. The many boulders across the valley floor, but these are hidden by ten millennium soil creation. The dead trees in Silver Lake caused by the rising water levels.

Nevertheless the geological forces that created Silver Lake are important to note. It shows that tall mountains can be brought down by erosion and cracking in the soil and rock slopes.
