Matt de la Pena's novel "Mexican White Boy" is about a high school baseball player, Danny, who is half-Mexican and half-Anglo. For the Summer, he is staying with his Mexican cousins in San Diego. One day, his cousin Sofia takes him to the San Diego County Fair, also known as the Del Mar Fair, along with some of her friends...and one of the boys who has already had a scrape with her cousin.
At the Fair, the group drink liquor that they have sneaked inside. They go on the Ferris Wheel, go to an art exhibit, go to the food mall, and then try their hand at a booth to see which of the boys can throw a ball the fastest. Danny was too drunk to participate...but after one of the guys insults the carney...Danny throws the remaining ball...and far outbeats all the other guys..despite his inebriated condition.
