Matt de la Pena's novel "Mexican White Boy" has a scene take place here at Petco Park.
The main character, Danny, a high-school baseball player, goes to Petco Park with his friend Uno to see the Padres play the Los Angeles Dodgers. It is the first time Danny and Uno have ever been to a professional game,
While watching the game, Danny orders a hotdog from a vendor...only to recognize that the vendor is the man who he thought had been a Padre scout who had been following him. The vendor scurries away...but Danny follows him and makes him reveal what's going on. The vendor admits that he is not a scout..but has been watching over Danny as a favor for his Dad. For years, Danny has believed that his Dad was living in Mexico. The vendor tells Danny that his Dad has been in prison and once saved his life there.
Danny returns to his seat and Uno...his mind in a whirlwind.
