Brigadier General Charles Paesley George enlisted in the 118th Company, Coast Artillery Corps in 1905. Commissioned in 1908, George served with the 6th Field Artillery during the Punitive Expedition in Mexico. He rose to the rank of Colonel during World War I. George won international fame on the U.S. Olympic Equestrian Team, riding in France and Holland. He served as an official in the 1932 Olympic Games. George served in the Inspector General’s Department, 1934-38. He commanded the 18th Field Artillery and the Field Artillery School Troops, 1938-41. In 1941 he organized the Field Artillery Replacement Training Center at Fort Sill. He commanded several field artillery regiments and an artillery brigade during World War II. General George retired in San Antonio in 1945 for disability.

In October of 1919, BG George, then Colonel, took part in a 300 mile endurance test for saddle horses. This test was to help determine the best type of horse for the Army. The course ran from Fort Ethan Allen, VT to Camp Devens, MA. The event was over a period of five days at the rate of 60 miles per day. George rode his horse Bob in the event. Bob was a 13 year old half-bred horse weighing 1072.5 lbs. Bob was taken out of the course in Milford, NH, just 23 miles from the finish due to his leg stiffness. Bob had spent six months in Mexico and 17 months in France and underwent many hardships. George's account of the test determined that Arab horses were the best breed for power and endurance, but not completely as a saddle horse. His recommendation to the Army was the infusion of the Arab blood into the saddle horses currently in the Army.
