"On June 26, 1804, Lewis and Clark passed through the territoy on their expidition to the Pacific Coast. They landed on the nec of lans between the two rivers that is called "Kaw Point," a part of the present city and rested for two days, making observations, and overhauling equipment." Kaw Point was part of the land originally claimed by Spain, then by France, until ultimately the United States bought it as part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The Lewis and Clark expedition party camped at Kaw Point June 26–28, 1804, on their way from St. Louis to the Pacific Ocean"
