On July 22, 2015, Chester Tela Jr. of Deerfield, MA was riding his bicycle northbound in the breakdown lane at about 4 pm on Routes 5 and 10 when he was hit from behind by a car driven by a 68-year-old woman from Turners Falls, MA. He was taken to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield where he later died of his injuries.
The driver of the car was cited for a marked lanes violation. The accident is under investigation by the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, Massachusetts State Police Detective Unit, and Deerfield Police Department.
