After the British Ambassador dies at the British Embassy in Washington, Salvatore Morizio, a detective with the Washington Police Department is summoned to a meeting at the White House. In Chapter 4, Morizio meets with a Dr. Gibronski, apparently a National Security official at the White House. He is introduced to Peter Thorpe, a representative of the British government who, Morizio is told, will be responsible for all aspects of the investigation into the suspicious death of the Ambassador. Morizio is given a mixed message...to stay out of the way but also to provide assistance to Thorpe if requested.
The meeting ends with Morizio not having a good impression of the situation or Thorpe.
