EN: The Untere Wacht is on the northern edge of the old town of Waldenburg, opposite the church. The two-storey half-timbered house attracts attention mainly by its portico with four round wooden pillars in front of the recessed ground floor.
The house was built in 1842 as a toll post. Before there was the north gate of the city wall at this location, which had to make way for a road widening. In front of the gate there has been a kind of guard station since the 17th century, which was also demolished. Intake of road tolls was since the 12th century an important source of revenue and the underlying reason for the founding of the town. Later, the house served as a police station with the policeman apartment upstairs.
DE: Die Untere Wacht seht am Nordrand der Altstadt von Waldenburg gegenüber der Kirche. Das zweistöckige Fachwerkhaus fällt vor allem durch seine Vorhalle mit den vier runden Holzsäulen vor dem zurückgesetzten Erdgeschoss auf.
Das Haus wurde 1842 als Zollstation erbaut. An seiner Stelle stand vorher das Nordtor der Stadtmauer, das einer Strassenverbreiterung weichen musste. Vor dem Tor war schon seit dem 17. Jahrhundert eine Art Wachstation gestanden, die auch abgerissen wurde. Die Einnahme von Strassenzöllen war seit dem 12. Jahrhundert eine wichtige Einnahmequelle und der eigentliche Grund für die Gründung des Städtchens. Später diente das Haus als Polizeistation mit Wohnung des Polizisten im Obergeschoss.
