While the Hexentanzplatz (German for Witches Dance Floor) is famous mainly for its spooky stories around witches and devils, the area has a lot more to offer. One of the hidden treasures is a small zoo.
Directly adjacent to the zoo are the Bodetal nature preserve and the Harz National Park. The zoo is designed as an exhibition of the wildlife of the Harz Montains, featuring only animals that are indigenous to the local area or (in case of bear and wolf) used to live here, until humans drove them away. |

The zoo offers a lot of innovative ideas to educate people about the animals in their back yard. A special trail (above left), called "Welche Spur ist das?" (What track is this) shows different animal tracks. The tracks are displayed on wooden planks (left), together with a sign of the respective animal.
Below, we have tried to match our pictures of the tracks and signs with pictures of the zoo's animals.
