TRANSITIONS
A Legacy in Stone

This Legacy Monument entitled ''Transitions" is a 2007 Centennial symbol of Narmata's fine heritage and future. The Monument, located on the shores of Okanagan Lake, is where the Syilx Nation people gathered for centuries and new settlers arrived one hundred years ago by land and water. The design of Transitions is steeped in symbolism, much of which is in the eyes of the beholder.

From early history, the Okanagan (Syilx) Nation, as hunters and gatherers, symbolized respect for, and preservation of, the Bear (north), Salmon (west), Saskatoon Betties (east) and Bitter Root (south). These images, etched into four black granite circles in the, monument; are set into a mound; perhaps decorative shell of a Turtle rising from the water (Sacred Life Force). Not only does it hold the weight of the Earth and Stone (Time keeper), but also takes life from the Air (Breath of Earth) and the fire (Warmth and Comfort). The Turtle reflects Wisdom, Vision, Ingenuity and Spirit of people in caring for the quality and sustainability of our living earth.

The four local Coral Granite Pillars of Strength are testament to the bonding together of the life force of all elements through the collective spirit of all life forms. One may view them together as four elderly wise folk passing on knowledge to our younger generation, to help them achieves finely balanced future. Cradled below the pillars rests a white marble Spiral Spirit Stone: The Journey of Life. The Spiral form, seen as a positive symbol historically, is associated with the cycles of life, seasons, growth and change Transitions over time. Spiralling through mineral to plant to animal to human form, the evolution of our ecology may be justifiably acknowledged. The Spirit Stone also captures the delicate quality of life and positive spirit of the community of Naramata. Each and everyone who experiences the Legacy in Stone will see it in their own light. It may be perceived as a landmark for meeting people; a gathering place, or a place to hear and play music. It may tell time by the suns shadows as the seasons pass. It may hold an individual's spirit, beliefs, knowledge, colour and memories as we glide into the future. It is hoped that we ultimately continue a time honoured respect for maintaining this wonderful place and time in Naramata.
