Transitions
Boll, Gin, Mercer, Nep and Lumen are the 'Transitions' sculptures designed by artist Ian Randell, formed from bronze, granite, stainless steel and water. Symbols of the natural and industrial growth of cotton, they celebrate Blackburn's economic and physical development.
The transitions are a work of progression. The unfolding bronze bud and leaves suggest an awakening of the industrial revolution. Strong steel tubes are symbolic of new stability and affluence from textile production.
The water represents the river Blakewater critical to the development of cotton textile production. A mapping pattern charts the town's massive growth.
The old shell falls and is scattered, reflecting the remnants of the textile era still seen around modern Blackburn. A new seed of progress sits high reflecting the town's optimism for the future."
