The map is one of a series to be found throughout Bedford and are easily recognisable. They are fromed of a tall, thin pillar, roughly 2.5 metres tall and 0.5 metres wide and about 5 centimetres in depth. The pillars are double-sided with a map showing on each side.
At the top of the pillar is the name "Bedford Borough Council" and the town's coat-of-arms. Immediately beneath that is a black section that shows directional arrows to some of the important local locations.
Below that is the main area map. In the corner there is a key that shows the direction of north, pedestrianised zones, station link and car parks. There is also a scale bar. The map is overlaid with a grid with letters ("A" to "E") running from left to right and numbers (1 to 5) from top to bottom.
The map is centred on Bedford town centre. Open, park type areas are shown in green and water is blue. Local streets are shown and named. The railway stations, bus station, toilets and the information centre are indicated. Other important locations are highlighted in yellow boxes. There is a blue circle drawn around the "you are here" location that shows a walking time of about ten minutes. The "you are here" location is shown in a blue box. This is a very clearly laid-out map and very useful.
Below the main map is a second map that shows Bedford and its environs with the main roads leading into the town centre.
