His Majesty's was built in 1904 in the Federation Free Classical style, at the time of opening, His Majesty's Theatre was the largest theatre in Australia, featured the country's largest stage and highest fly tower. The original seating capacity was 2584 people in three tiers, with 974 in the stalls and the horseshoe-shaped dress circle (seating 540) and upper gallery (seating 1,074) bringing the audience closer to the performers.
After extensive renovations in the 1970's the seating was reduced to 1254
