Der Name von Bad Lobenstein geht auf folgende Sage zurück:

Der Sage nach soll Kaiser Ludwig der Bayer (1282- 1347) in dieser Gegend gejagt und dabei seinen Lieblingshund verloren haben.
Ein Edelmann fand den Bracken ermattet an einem Stein und brachte ihn dem Kaiser zurück. Darauf soll der Kaiser gerufen haben: " Der Stein, wo man ihn fand, sei zu loben !".
Jedoch ist die Zeit irrig, denn zu Lebzeiten dieses Kaisers war der Name Lobenstein schon urkundlich erwähnt.

Blazonierung:
Das Stadtwappen zeigt einen in schwarz und silber gehaltenen, senkrecht geteilten Brackenkopf mit Hals auf rotem Grund.
