Das Volksparkstadion ist ein Kategorie-4-Stadion nach der Stadionklassifikation der UEFA und verfügt über eine Kapazität von 57.000 Plätzen, von denen 10.000 Stehplätze, 3.620 Business Seats, 711 Logenplätze und 120 Plätze für Rollstuhlfahrer sind. Für internationale Spiele, bei denen eine reine Sitzplatzbestuhlung vorgeschrieben ist, werden die unter den Stehplätzen verborgenen Klappsitze benutzt, wodurch sich die Kapazität des Stadions auf 51.500 Plätze verringert.
Neben den Heimspielen des HSV war das Stadion Austragungsort der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 1974, der Fußball-Europameisterschaft 1988, der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft 2006 und des Europa-League-Finales 2010.
Eigentümerin des Stadions ist die HSV-Stadion HSV-Vermögensverwaltungs GmbH & Co. KG, die das Stadion an die HSV-Arena GmbH & Co. KG vermietet.
Das Stadion sorgte ab 2001 für Aufsehen, da es viermal seinen Namen wechselte. Zunächst war der HSV Deutschlands Vorreiter beim Verkauf seiner Namensrechte an einen Sponsor. Da jedoch Klaus-Michael Kühne 2015 die Namensrechte bis 2019 erwarb und sich für eine Umbenennung in Volksparkstadion entschied, wurde der HSV der erste Bundesligist, dessen Stadion den ursprünglichen Namen zurück erhielt."
