The "Delta" is best seen from the air or along Scenic Route 160.
It wanders through Sacramento County, parts of Yolo Co, Solano Co., San Joaquin County, and Contra Costa County. It is the largest estuary on the west coast. The Delta Cross Channel was constructed in 1950 -51, with large 60' x 30' gates. The purpose was a diversion of water to the Delta Mendota canal (southbound).
Total length of the diversion is 1.2 miles.
It had significant impacts on fish migration. Since 2003, the gates are closed for 109 day (from Feb.1 - May 20 for salmon protection.
Gates are also closed when water speed is greater than 20 - 25 kcfs.
They are managed by the Bureau of Reclamation, Central Valley Operation out of Sacramento.
