An alligator snapping turtle survived his crossing of Apache Avenue on the east side of Terral, OK this afternoon, thanks to the efforts of one waymarker.

These are very dangerous turtles. Don't screw with them, as they can remove fingers -- their necks are longer than most folks think, approach them from the back, and they can really turn around quickly -- and QDV isn't much of a turtle handler, either. Our turtle was halfway across the street when I noticed someone ahead of me, swerving around him. Alligator snapping turtles have the same attitude as the honey badger, and this guy wasn't fazed by the other car or mine. I managed to get him to get on a rug I have in the car and then cover him up with another rug as I dragged him across the street to his destination. He lunged at me several times and really stood his ground.
