A town crier announced earlier news in the city, when there were no newspapers. He brought the population aware of communications from the city council and listings of tradespeople.

The town crier symbolizes an old custom in Meppel. The location De Wheem was chosen because this square is the center of the market trading.
This Sculpture was created by Jan Krikke from Giethoorn.

The picture shows a man in medieval dress with a bell in the left hand and the right hand holding a notepad.
