The real San Jacinto Monument commemorates the decisive 1836 battle near the banks of the Buffalo Bayou and the San Jacinto River that allowed Texas to win independence from Mexico.
This replica monument was dedicated in 1951 by the Lucas Gusher Monument Association to commemorate the Spindletop oilfield, discovery on January 10, 1901, which marked the birth of the modern petroleum industry.
