Seit dem 15. Dezember 2013 hat Leipzig eine neue S-Bahn-Magistrale mitten durch die Innenstadt - allerdings unter der Erde. Der Bau dieser kleinen U-Bahn-Strecke war in Leipzig nicht unumstritten. Viele Bürger_innen machten sich Sorgen um die darüberliegende alte Bausubstanz, die Bauzeit und nicht zuletzt die anfallenden Kosten. Heute werden die S-Bahn-Stationen im Leipziger Stadtzentrum sehr gut genutzt. Vor allem für Menschen von umliegenden Klein- und Mittelstädten sowie den Außenbezirken von Leipzig ist die neue Anbindung an das Stadtzentrum ein großer Gewinn.
Haltepunkt Leipzig Markt:
Direkt unter dem historischen Marktplatz (in 22m Tiefe) befindet sich heute die S-Bahn-Station Leipzig Markt. Der Mittelbahnsteig ist 140m lang und über einen Nord- sowie einen Südzugang mit der Oberfläche verbunden. Der Süd-Zugang erfolgt durch die historische Treppenanlage des früheren Untergrundmessehauses mit seinen massiven Natursteinblöcken und Art-déco-Elementen.
Täglich frequentieren sechs verschiedene S-Bahn-Linien (S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S5X) in regelmäßigen Abständen den Haltepunkt.

Since December 15, 2013 Leipzig has a new S-Bahn route through the middle of the city center - but under the ground. The construction of this small underground route was not without controversy in Leipzig. Many people were worried about the overlying old buildings, the time of construction and not least the costs. Today the S-Bahn stations in teh city-center are used very well. Especially for people from surrounding small and medium towns and the outskirts of Leipzig is the new connection to the city center a big win.
Station Leipzig Markt:
The S-Bahn station Leipzig Markt is directly below the historic market square (in 22m depth). The central platform is 140m long and it is connected to the surface by a north and a south access. The southern access use the historic staircase of the former underground exhibition building with its massive stone blocks and Art Deco elements.
Daily six different S-Bahn lines (S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S5X) frequenting the breakpoint at regular intervals.
