This is one of those museums that just doesn’t seem to fit it’s locale. Houston doesn’t have much to do with the printing industry, no major publishers are located here, and the only local daily, the
Houston Chronicle, isn’t exactly known for it’s ability to win pulitzers. Nonetheless, this small museum does an excellent job of presenting the fascinating history of printing.
Displays trace the development of the industry from papyrus to paper, from ‘factories’ of hand-writing monks to the Xerox machine. The permanent exhibit includes a Gutenberg Bible, the Gutenberg press, and the beautifully artistic Book of Kells. Temporary exhibits focus on artwork created with different printing techniques. Even if you’re not into printing, you just might enjoy this place.
