Aina is a 15-foot tall fountain sculpture by artist Kim Duffet which is welcoming visitors at the gateway to Waikiki. It represents the four elements of life: earth, air, fire and water.
From Kim Duffet website:
"Aina (The Land)
Inspired by the classic Hawaiian ring poi pounder (pohaku ku'i ai puka) and its pounding board (papa ku'i ai) this kinetic sculpture in granite represents a cycle of the elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water. Earth stands above as a profile of the islands from which Hawaii's stunning waterfalls flow. The Air at the open center feeds the flame of Fire and the surging Water over the heiau of lava rock represents the sea that surrounds us. Petroglyphs symbolizing these four powerful elements are cast as a lei around the pool's edge. 'Aina, born of Pele's fire, an expression of the creative forces that make Hawai'i so unique. Commissioned for The Grand Waikikian by Hilton Grand Vacations, Honolulu, Hawai'i." (
