Taken from the book, "Mission San Jose, 15.8m (48 alt., 525 pop), clusters arena La Mission del Gloriosimo Patriacha Señor San Jose (the mission of the most glorious patriarch, St. Joseph), the fourteenth mission in order of time and one of the most prosperous, founded Jun 11, 1797 by Padre Fermin Francisco Lasuen. The mission structures were first built of timber roofed with grass and later rebuilt of adobe. The German explorer Georg Heinrich von Langsdorff, visiting here in May 1806, wrote: "The quantity of corn in the granaries far excess my expectations...and a proportionate quantity of maize, barley, peas, beans, and other grains. The kitchen garden is extremely well laid out, and kept in very good order..." -- California: A guide to the Golden State, 1939
