When the Benei Yehuda congregation formed in 1907 the community rented a house on Cordova Street to worship. By 1921 the growing congregation built this synagogue on Pender Street which could house 600 people. However the congregation continued to grow and by 1947 they had moved to a new building on Oak Street.
Today the original Schara Tzedeck synagogue has been converted in condominiums.
