There's a reason that the Dallas locals will put up with a restaurant adorned with things Philadelphia, like the hated Eagles: Fred -- a Philly native -- makes a terrific cheesesteak, one that even Philly transplants consider authentic. Besides the classic cheesesteak, Fred offers all kinds of variants on the theme if you'd like to add mushrooms, tomatoes, lettuce, or peppers, but if cheesesteak isn't your thing, there are hoagies, burgers (the Fat Fred is a burger with cheesesteak on top), salads, wings, chicken sandwiches, veggie burgers, and even shrimp po' boys. They have a small children's menu, and soft drinks and snacks (like Utz chips) are available. The current menu is always available on the website. There is plenty of room for dining in, but they are terrific about getting takeout orders ready if you phone in.
Want to go on the cheap? Six nuggets for the kids is $4.15, or you can get a lettuce and tomato salad for $1.49. Really, though?
The Pigout Option: Fred's offers The Liberty Bell Challenge, which is a two foot sandwich made up of sixteen slices of cheese, twenty-two ounces of onions, and sixty ounces of cheesesteak, all on an Amoroso roll. Eat it in thirty minutes and it's free. If not, hand Fred $48. There are photos of this monster on the website.
Closed Sunday, open Monday - Saturday, 11 AM to 8 PM. Cash and credit cards accepted.
